TITLE : Setting up Paradox SE to run under Windows
This Tech Info sheet describes how to use Paradox SE with
Windows. There are two basic tasks to be accomplished before
using Paradox SE with Windows. First, some changes may need to
be made to the CONFIG.SYS file in the root directory of the hard
disk. Second, a Windows .PIF file (Program Information File)
will need to be created for Paradox SE. The following paragraphs
discuss these changes and settings. Consult the Windows User
Guide and the PIFEDIT.HLP file for information on PIF Editor
Set both the FILES and BUFFERS statements in the CONFIG.SYS files
to a value of at least 30, not the default of 20 required by
Paradox. In addition, Windows may have installed two DEVICE=
statements in the CONFIG.SYS file. They would be the following:
Device = C:\HIMEM.SYS (provides XMS support to extended
memory programs)
Device = C:\SMARTDRV.SYS (adds a disk-caching program for
computers that have a hard disk and extended or
expanded memory)
If the computer does not have any extended memory (memory above
640K), these statements should not have been placed in the
CONFIG.SYS file; if they were, remove them. For more information
on modifying the CONFIG.SYS file, please consult the MS-DOS or
PC-DOS documentation.
Next, create a .PIF file for Paradox using the PIF Editor
supplied with Windows. The following settings should be used for
Paradox:

For specific instructions on creating a .PIF file and what these
settings mean, please consult the Windows documentation and
PIFEDIT.HLP.
Since Paradox has its own internal disk cache, using SMARTDRV.SYS
is not necessary. Therefore it would be acceptable to remove the
"Device = c:\SMARTDRV.SYS" line. If a disk cache program like
SMARTDRV.SYS is loaded, then the cache percent in the Paradox
Custom Configuration Program will need to be set to 0.
After modifying the CONFIG.SYS file and creating a .PIF file for
Paradox, you should now be able to run a single copy within
Windows. These settings should work on most computers that have
Windows 3.1 installed. However, with the variety of hardware and
Windows device drivers available, these settings may not work
with every installation. If there are problems switching from
Paradox to Windows and back, change two of the display options:
Retain Video Memory: Checked
Monitor Ports:
Text: Checked
