  18.   This Tech Info sheet describes how to use Paradox SE with
  19.   Windows.  There are two basic tasks to be accomplished before
  20.   using Paradox SE with Windows.  First, some changes may need to
  21.   be made to the CONFIG.SYS file in the root directory of the hard
  22.   disk.  Second, a Windows .PIF file (Program Information File)
  23.   will need to be created for Paradox SE.  The following paragraphs
  24.   discuss these changes and settings.  Consult the Windows User
  25.   Guide and the PIFEDIT.HLP file for information on PIF Editor
  26.   Set both the FILES and BUFFERS statements in the CONFIG.SYS files
  27.   to a value of at least 30, not the default of 20 required by
  28.   Paradox.  In addition, Windows may have installed two DEVICE=
  29.   statements in the CONFIG.SYS file.  They would be the following:

  32.           Device = C:\HIMEM.SYS (provides XMS support to extended
  33.                    memory programs)

  36.           Device = C:\SMARTDRV.SYS (adds a disk-caching program for
  37.                    computers that have a hard disk and extended or
  38.                    expanded memory)

  41.   If the computer does not have any extended memory (memory above
  42.   640K), these statements should not have been placed in the
  43.   CONFIG.SYS file; if they were, remove them.  For more information
  44.   on modifying the CONFIG.SYS file, please consult the MS-DOS or
  45.   PC-DOS documentation.

  296.   settings mean, please consult the Windows documentation and
  297.   PIFEDIT.HLP.

  299.   Since Paradox has its own internal disk cache, using SMARTDRV.SYS
  300.   is not necessary.  Therefore it would be acceptable to remove the
  301.   "Device = c:\SMARTDRV.SYS" line.  If a disk cache program like
  302.   SMARTDRV.SYS is loaded, then the cache percent in the Paradox
  303.   Custom Configuration Program will need to be set to 0.

  305.   After modifying the CONFIG.SYS file and creating a .PIF file for
  306.   Paradox, you should now be able to run a single copy within
  307.   Windows.  These settings should work on most computers that have
  308.   Windows 3.1 installed.  However, with the variety of hardware and
  309.   Windows device drivers available, these settings may not work
  310.   with every installation.  If there are problems switching from
  311.   Paradox to Windows and back, change two of the display options:
